Fertility Preservation

Fertility preservation refers to the process of saving or protecting eggs, sperm, or reproductive tissue in order to have biological children in the future. Fertility preservation is yet another breakthrough achieved by medical science. Initially, it was a sub-process that took place during the IVF process only; however, now it is emerging as a full-fledged separate branch. It is a branch where more and more people are coming under this umbrella to preserve their fertility for non-fertile days.

Egg freezing, also known as mature oocyte cryopreservation, is the medical process of harvesting eggs from one’s ovaries and freezing them until the female is ready for pregnancy. t is basically to preserve reproductive potential of a women even at a later age.

It is mostly used in advanced age and cancer patients. In cancer patients particularly, due to radiation egg quality can be decreased. So as to avoid fertility issues in later age. Ovarian tissue freezing has emerged as a boon for many people, who were going for various cancer treatments. Cryopreservation of eggs is done. Cryopreservation is achieved by storing healthy eggs in Liquid Nitrogen containers.

Freezing sperm is a similar process when we compare it with egg freezing. It helps men to preserve their fertility who is about to have a treatment that can cause infertility such as cancer therapy, prostate or testicular surgery. Slow freezing- In this method, sperm cooling is done over a period of two to four hours. Then the specimen is placed into liquid nitrogen at minus 196-degree celsius.

Rapid freezing – Here, sterile samples are directly immersed into liquid nitrogen within eight to ten minutes. Due to the high fluidity of the sperm membrane and less water content, sperms are less prone to any damage during cryopreservation.

Embryo Preservation:

To begin with, the woman will be given medication to induce the release of multiple eggs. These eggs are retrieved and are allowed to fertilize with the partner’s sperms. Fertilized eggs or embryos are frozen three to five days after fertilization.
