During pregnancy, embryo formation involves the fertilization of a healthy oocyte by a healthy sperm. If either the egg or the sperm has an anomaly, successful fertilization does not occur. However, using a donor egg or sperm or even embryo can help couples achieve pregnancy.
Egg donation:
A woman unable to get pregnant with her oocytes can use an egg that is donated by another woman to achieve pregnancy. Egg donation in IVF occurs when an egg is extracted from a woman’s body and stored under all the necessary conditions before use.
Egg donation is used in case of Ovarian pathology in a woman; The presence of genetic diseases that can cause birth defects in the fetus; Advanced Age.
Below are the general requirements for donors in IVF –
- 21 to 36 years;
- Having at least one healthy naturally born child;
- With good indicators of the state of physical health and psyche;
- Must not be a carrier of genetic, hereditary, or infectious diseases that can be transmitted to the offspring

When the cause of infertility is due to low sperm count or distorted sperm structure, donor sperm can be used for fertilization with a healthy egg in IVF.
Sperm can be donated by individuals who-
- Do not smoke
- Are aged between 18 to 40
- Are physically healthy
- Have passed extensive medical and genetic screening tests
Sperm donation is used in case of:
- Couples where the male partner’s sperm yields poor results in IVF
- When the male partner lacks spermatozoa (azoospermia)
- When the male partner is a carrier of genetic disease
- When the male partner is a carrier of a serious STD such as HIV
- Women without a male partner
The transfer of an embryo resulting from male and female gamete, not taken from the recipient and/or her partner is known as IVF with embryo donation. It is also referred to as a type of third-party reproduction.
Indications:
- Gonadal dysgenesis (Defective embryonic development of gonad in male or female).
- Women with premature ovarian failure or iatrogenic ovarian failure (due to ovarian surgery or radiation) or is a poor responder to ovarian stimulation and the man suffers from a severe disturbance in gamete production.
- Couple who are carriers of a hereditary disease which may cause significant morbidity in the newborn.
- Women who have attained menopause with male factor infertility.
